Following the class captains meeting, plans for 2010 are now swinging into action. The major change is that the week has been extended by one day to bring it into alignment with the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta and provide a little more flexibility in the event that the weather is uncooperative(!) There will also be more joint activity with BCYC. The Big Boats will be in Cowes for the Westward Cup earlier in the month and stay on to participate in Cowes Classic Week. We very much hope that the replica of Britannia will by then be able to join us. We have two anniversaries - the Yarmouth One Design Centenary and the Dragon Classic Championship - see keelboat page for details. It is the 75th Anniversary of the Sq.m. Class (German Rule) including the "Windfall Yachts" & 75th Anniversary of RNSA: Built from the mid-30's onwards, these boats were used for seamanship and navigational training for the German forces at a time when they were prohibited from having a Navy. Boats were brought to the UK and allocated to British services units after the war and became known as the "Windfall Yachts". We hope other boats will join us from the Baltic. The 100sq.m. Overlord and 50 sq.m. Sea Scamp have already committed. In conjunction with The Association of Square Metre Yachts and the Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA). This fleet has now been moved to sail with BCYC under IRC
Our Charity for this event is Brainstrust which is a UK based brain cancer charity, dedicated to improving clinical care for brain tumour sufferers and providing co-ordinated support in their search for treatment. Brainstrust was founded by Helen and Peter Bulbeck who are 6 metre sailors and have given considerable support to the class. Following last year's Second Metre & Classic Keelboat Regatta which ran alongside the British Classic Yacht Club Regatta, Cowes has become the centre for classic sailing in Northern Europe, consistent with its heritage. By working together again, Cowes Classics Week is emerging as the week in which to hold events for classic boats attracting a major international following. These events will bring to Cowes the largest fleet of classic boats ever assembled in the UK.

The Metre Regatta evolved from the successful Centenary Regatta for the International Rule held in Cowes during July 2007 at which 80 Metre boats attended from places as far apart as Australia and the USA. There had been a latent demand from the keelboats for a similar event, now fulfilled. The British Classic Yacht Club Regatta is now in its 9th year, growing in stature year-on-year. And this year, a Rally fleet has been introduced, open to non-racing classic yachts, to broaden the community still further. Fleet racing will be organised for individual classes where numbers are sufficient. Otherwise, a class result may be provided in a mixed fleet and handicap racing under IRC provided for others. Amongst the racing keelboats, support has already been received from owners of Darings, Dragons, Sunbeams, Bembridge Redwing, X One Design, Bembridge One Design and Yarmouth One Designs in sufficient numbers for fleet racing. It will be a great opportunity for the many one-design classes from around the country to come together once a year. In the past, almost every major yacht club has commissioned their own one-design. Many of these normally only have the opportunity to sail in small local fleets based around the few remaining boats and enthusiastic owners and some fleets are so fragmented that they have little opportunity to sail together. On the whole, they are fairly easily moved and mainland facilities have been organised for launching and the crossing to Cowes. Following on from the Regatta, The Household Division Yacht Club hold a one day regatta every year on the Saturday before Cowes Week followed by the Royal Yacht Squadron Regatta on Sunday - traditional warm-up races for Cowes Week - see details. It is hoped that fleets may adopt the event as a regular or occasional slot in their calendar although the format is designed to enable all-comers. Class Captains are encouraged to contact David Elliott – see contacts. | ||||||||||||
