Cowes Classics Week is pleased to welcome the Seaview One Designs on an informal visit for the first time. The SVOD’s are organising a passage race on Sunday 9 July from their home at the Sea View Yacht Club, round to Cowes where they will lay suitable courses for a day of exciting and close matched one design classic dinghy racing.
Founded in 1931, all of the SVOD’s were hand-built in Seaview, in the North East corner of the Isle of Wight, and many have been owned by the same family for decades, having been passed down through generations of sailors.
They are a strict one-design class and the boats remain faithful to their original design, with the hull, spars and rudders remaining wooden, while embracing some more up-to-date elements: running rigging; self bailers; the use of electronic compasses; and Hyde Sails modern technology for the mainsail and jib.
You can find out more about the SVOD Class and how to become involved at the Sea View Yacht Club website.
The SVOD Racing at CCW - Sunday 9 July 2023
The SVOD's will be attending with their own one-the-water support including either one or two RIBs depending on entry numbers to provide safety cover and to lay marks and manage race starts from on the water.
The intention is to run up to five races;
- First race is a passage race from Seaview to the RLYC finish line, leaving Seaview at 07.00am with expected arrive/finish around 09.00am.
- Then a 10.00am start, 30-40 minute race
- Then a 11.00am start, 30-40 minute race
- Then a 12pm start
- Finally a 1pm start, with a passage race back to Seaview.
We are expecting around 10 SVOD’s to attend and although they have arranged on-shore logistics support with access to Shepherds Marina if necessary, there is an upper wind limit of circa 17knots with the ‘go-no-go’ decision being taken on Saturday evening.
